BAK3D
OPEN CALL 2 | INNOVATION SUPPORT
Name: Machine Vision Solution for Product Customization and Process Optimization in Bakery Industry
Resource efficiency
Abstract:
The BAK3D project seeks to introduce innovative machine vision solutions with dual applications within the industrial bakery sector:
- Firstly, the project focuses on the development and implementation of 3D Reconstruction and Photorealistic Rendering solutions. This involves the customization of both hardware and software components to offer customers a novel product experience in the industrial bakery sector, facilitating heightened levels of customization.
- Secondly, the project employs 3D reconstruction techniques to digitize bakery production processes. The objective is to generate comprehensive digital information that can be leveraged to optimize the entire industrial workflow, thereby reducing waste and energy consumption.
The application of industry-specific vision solutions in the bakery sector has been limited, primarily due to the unique challenges posed by the nature of bakery products. Conventional 3D techniques encounter difficulties when applied to food items with shiny and glossy surfaces, as well as irregular and nonpredictable
geometries. To overcome these challenges, the BAK3D project involves the utilization of
custom-built hardware technologies for 3D scanning, developed by the project leader, FlexSight that specializes in prototyping 3D scanners for diverse applications.
FlexSight will specifically develop a customized 3D scanner named “3Dome”. This device integrates multi-stereo capabilities with high-resolution industrial-grade cameras and laser projectors to achieve high-fidelity 3D reconstructions of food products. Simultaneously, it produces highly photorealistic renderings, serving as innovative showcase tools for bakery customers.
The BAK3D project, supported by the Mind4Machine EU program, will address the aforementioned challenges. This program provides effective tools for developing future commercial and marketing strategies. The technology implemented by FlexSight will progress from its current Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 to TRL 7. The collaboration with La Fabrique, the industrial project partner, will enable the practical application of developed tools to a real industrial use case. Ultimately, the project aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, marking a pioneering application of 3D reconstruction and photorealistic rendering techniques in the challenging and complex industrial bakery scenario
