Flexible manufacturing systems (FMS)

Abstract: The RIM project aims to enhance flexible manufacturing systems (FMS) by integrating advanced robotics to handle high-dexterity tasks typically requiring human intervention. While FMS can efficiently adapt to varying production demands and improve efficiency, certain tasks involving fragile parts or complex assemblies still necessitate manual labor, affecting production time and product quality. RIM addresses these challenges by developing a novel solution that combines the Magos Platform with an under-actuated anthropomorphic robotic hand designed by SIEMENS. This system offers natural interaction, realistic haptic feedback, high dexterity with 22 degrees of freedom, precise control with 1-degree accuracy per finger joint, and remote operation capabilities. Utilizing SIEMENS’ experimental facilities, RIM creates a digital twin application allowing users to teach robots complex tasks, thereby reaching Technology Readiness Level 7. This approach aims to provide an affordable, agile, and flexible manufacturing solution that enhances production efficiency and customization without significant cost increases.
