Abstract: WeldBOT is an innovative, self-navigating robotic welding solution designed to transform the shipbuilding and repair industry, dubbed Shipbuilding 2.0. The project aims to automate welding tasks, enhancing efficiency, safety, and quality while reducing material usage. Current shipbuilding practices are inefficient due to unique vessel designs, leading to high costs and prolonged production times. WeldBOT addresses these challenges by utilizing cognitive technologies for operation in unstructured environments, promoting flexible manufacturing systems. The integrated Decision Support System (DSS) optimizes welding parameters through machine learning, improving quality and minimizing human risks. The system includes a UR10e cobot, a 3D scanner for creating digital twins, and an onboard seam tracker for real-time trajectory adjustments. Advancing from TRL 6 to TRL 7, WeldBOT is ready for operational deployment in shipyards, overcoming limitations of existing welding robots that rely on CAD models and controlled environments. By reducing setup times and enabling intuitive operation, WeldBOT enhances productivity, cost-effectiveness, and energy efficiency. Target customers are shipyards seeking modernization to increase capacity, orderbooks, and quality standards. The end-users include service providers, shipbuilding, and repair companies.
